What’s the Melbourne Big Design Market? And what cool stuff to buy? // Cos’e’ il Big Design Market di Melbourne? ‘Cool stuff’ da comprare!

Last weekend was the Bid Design Market Melbourne (5-7th December) weekend, a great opportunity to know some local crafters, from Jewellery to leather and garden Designers, home décor and more. Definitely a good opportunity to buy your Xmas gifts or something to reward yourself. A Colour explosion housed at the Royal Exhibition Building, in the Carlton Gardens, that made me feel alive, that made me feel at home, surrounded by creativity, stimuli for the sight, …and mostly beauty! If you missed this year, keep it in mind for 2015 or have a look at some the craft brands I took note of or bought something J Here are some of the makers I liked the most, with a special focus on jewellery: Creative, fun and unusual T-shirts by ‘Hamb’ Colourful, candy Jewellery by ‘Emily Green’ Geometric, modern jewellery by ‘inSync Design’ Leather products by ‘A thoughtful spot’ Leather goods and jewellery by ‘Oktoberdee’ Resin jewellery by ‘Resinate’ Handmade Jewellery by ‘Kristina Brenke’ If you want to know more, this is the official website: http://www.thebigdesignmarket.com ———- …

Dove si trova il paradiso della carta a Melbourne // Where’s the Paper (art & craft) paradise in Melbourne?

A lazy Sunday and hot morning in Melbourne, went out to get a couple of things done and indulged in visiting a shop I longed visiting for a while: Paperpoint. Well, I started exploring what was on the shelves and from the start I got positively overwhelmed by the colours and textures that were all around, let alone all the cute Xmas decorations, little puppets and little things all over the shop. I was in heaven. It was about just about joy! the little neurons or people that are in my head, just started running and jumping around, happy! A new idea after the other came out of all the things that Paperpoint was selling. Well, you’ll know I bought half of the shop and luckily it was lunch time and /i had to go home, otherwise it would have a been a much worse “economic disaster”! 🙂 It made me feel excited like when I used to spend hours at “Il Paradiso della carta‘ (The Paper paradise) in Milan or at ‘L’antica Cartoleria Novecento” …

A recipe for a relaxing getaway: Good Food, wine and … at Daylesford // Ricetta per il relax: Buona tavola e buon vino, e … a Daylesford

A kind staff will welcome you when you arrive at The Lake house in Daylesford. You enter an environment of indulgence, interesting pieces of furniture that all find their place. And it’s only 1 hour and a half from Melbourne. A relaxing getaway for a day or a weekend. This time the description in the post will be more detailed (e.g. the lunch menu), but I’ve organised it in sections so you can read what interests you the most. Salus Spa I’ve spent the first 2 hours being pampered at the Spa thanks to my husband’s wedding anniversary present. I indulged in a full body massage and a facial. All the lotions perfumes’ they used contributed to the relaxation experience as I ended smelling a bouquet of fresh vegetables, although I’ve later been told it was all about flowers and fruit. And I wasn’t even hungry! Well, still a mistery to me… All this while Carlo was enjoying the lounge. Although no one actually came up to him to ask if he wanted a glass …

What’s it like a Saturday afternoon at the Hot Springs // Un pomeriggio alle terme vicino a Melbourne

Another tick on my bucket list for Melbourne and Victoria: the Peninsula Hot springs at the tip of the Mornington Peninsula. It came as an invite to a prolonged birthday celebration of a French friend, it couldn’t have been a better invitation as I wanted to go there for a long time. And it was the perfect end to the celebration, the party of the Friday night was awesome! 🙂 It takes a 1h 30 min to get there, or 1h 15min via toll way. Once you’re on the Peninsula the panorama starts to be already very pleasant. Thing to absolutely know: you have to book your appointment in advance for a specific time, otherwise you risk being denied entrance, also if you’re late on a fully booked day. Yes, that’s Australia! Passed the admin, it’s a very enjoyable place, especially because it wasn’t that packed. You should not expect neither a luxurious place nor a European level hot springs, but they’re nonetheless pretty good. There are I think 30 pools, hot and cold, with …

My ‘Aussie’, but multicultural haircut // Il mio taglio ‘australiano, ma multiculturale

🙂 p.s. Perche’ australiano, ma multiculturale? Leggete il mio posto precedente http://wp.me/p2LzYl-Hr ———- // ———- I decided to win over shy and “who cares about your haircut?” and poublish actually 2 photos. As I was mentioning, most people won’t really give a damn about it, but as someone asked me about it, why not? We’re in the ‘selfie’, instagram, fb era, …

1st Haircut in Australia? // Primo taglio in Australia?

Sometimes we believe that there’s no place like our home country. There they do everything, or most things, better. Let’s take Hair-cutting and Italy. Well, objectively they cut your hair very well in Italy and my experience relies actually on Milan (lately Adore’) where I lived most of my life. If I say I had my 1st Haircut in Australia last week, it’s not true…I should say “since I’m back”. I once I had a haircut at Bondi beach with my friend Martina in 2001 and I was actually pretty happy with it! 🙂 But I can say I had my 1st cut in Melbourne 2 weeks ago and I survived! Just joking! As per my first lines, thinking I cannot have my hair cut anywhere else in the world (I’ve been back twice to Italy and I had my hair cut while I was there), I asked people to understand where to go, once passed the idea of hairdressers being more expensive here. As I liked the haircut style of my friend Penny, I …

10 first words I learnt in Australian slang // Le prime 10 parole che ho imparato in “australiano”

Finally after a long time I put together the list of the first 10 words of ‘Australian’ I learnt when I arrived in Melbourne. Yes because in Australia they speak a totally different language! J Come and read for yourself the first words I came across in the land Downunder. ARVO – short for ‘afternoon’, although I don’t particularly like the sound of this word AUSSIE – short for ‘Australian’ BARBIE – short for ‘barbeque’, essential word if you want to live and survive in Australia. You’ll attend and/or organise hundreds of them, it’s like the Italian Aperitivo, almost a National sport 😉 BREKKIE – short for ‘breakfast’, another important part of the day. You can’t start the day without ‘a good brekkie’, which often involves ‘Vegemite’. CHRISSIE – short for ‘Christmas’, a word we learnt after just 4 months of our arrival to Melbourne, since we spent here our first Xmas and we’re going to spend here the next. FOOTY – short for ‘football’, but the Australian one. Nobody living in Melbourne can afford …

POSITIVE MONDAY ! – Do you need some extra motivation to do something healthy? // Bisogno di una spinta in piu’ per muoversi e mangiare bene?

Eating well and doing sports should be part of our daily routine and it’s up to us to keep it up, but as we all know, it’s not always easy. Millions of things come up or we are just lazy or just the day you decided to go to the gym your mate invites you to grab a beer or whatever. I’m though firmly convinced that involving others really helps, as doing some activity together or sharing healthy recipes, own goals or achievements! It helps even more when an Insurance company, Medibank, launches an advertising campaign “Generation Better” (or #GenBetter) aimed to help you lead a healthy life, by sharing tips, yummy healthy recipes or just motivating you to go out there and do something: “Give it a go”. It also tells you nobody expects you to be a champion on your first day and not to worry about it, but to try to keep doing it , step by step, as long as you like it. It motivates you even more when by sharing …

4th time – Melbourne most liveable city! What are the others?

Even if it’s very quick, I could not avoid sharing this article. it’s been almost 2 years and Melbourne you already hold a special place in my heart! Everybody should stop by for a few days in Melbourne when visiting Australia! Why? Because of its lifestyle, its cafes and restaurant, different spots of the city where ‘Australian old’ mixes with super modern, South Melbourne and St Kilda, the beaches going towards the Mornington Peninsula and all the sorroundings if you fancy wine and food or rugged coastline and wildlife. I could write forever, but I’ll leave you to the article from SBS: http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2014/08/19/melbourne-again-worlds-most-liveable-city And enjoy below a quick selection of photographs of Melbourne and area.

Dry July, it rhymes! // Cosa fai? Dry July!

A Spanish friend of mine once told me: “Australians are always asking you to donate a gold coin”. And it’s true, does this come from altruism or not I don’t know. They also love challenging themselves, each month with a different thing: to loose weight, to raise money for a specific project or charity. And most of the times they do both. An example is the Movember, that most of you will know (read about it here), or as the month of July just ended, the “Dry July”. A month of avoiding booze, as they call it here, or alcohol, a problem in Australia, to support adults with cancer. After living almost 2 years in Australia, I can say that I like these challenges and I find them an intelligent way to both do some good to others, but also to yourself. As you’re challenging you to achieve a goal, strengthen your willpower and improve yourself. And if you don’t feel strong enough, there’s always a way as most people participate in teams. So the …
